Conditioned Pain Modulation in Patients with Fibromyalgia

We are seeking participants diagnosed with fibromyalgia to determine how a ‘conditioned’ pain stimulus affects the perception of a ‘test’ pain stimulus. The protocol takes approximately 30-45 min, and participants will be compensated $100 for their time.
Study description: Participants will undergo stimulation with a heat thermode, to establish their pain threshold. They will then undergo two heat pain stimulations, a cold pressor test, and a final heat pain stimulation. This is to explore how pain perception changes after the introduction of a secondary or “conditioned” pain stimulus. We want to compare how participants with chronic pain experience these changes in comparison to a control group.
Exclusion Criteria: You are not eligible to undergo testing if you are under 18 years of age, currently pregnant, or under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs during the time of testing. You may not undergo testing if you have a circulatory impairment, including Reynaud’s Disease, or any history of diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, cardiac disease, blood pressure problems or recent serious injury, because this could affect your judgments about the pain induction and could make your condition worse.
